Qatar is now the world's wealthiest country with an estimated GDP per capita of $106,000 in 2012. It also has significant strategic importance in terms of energy security, and has established itself as a leading player on regional and global issues.

While the global economic crisis has slowed growth and the pace of development in most parts of the world, Qatar remains a major trading partner for the UK with bilateral trade in goods and services reaching £6.6 billion in 2011. Qatari government investment in the UK now totals more than £20 billion, with further investments of more than £10 billion envisaged. Qatar is designated as one of UK Trade & Investment's High Growth Markets.

Following its successful bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar has major investment plans to upgrade its infrastructure including a new port and airport, an integrated rail system, roads and highways projects, hotels, hospitals, museums and residential property. We are working to position UK business as a long-term partner of choice for such projects.

Qatar's economic diversification and investment in human capital also continue to generate excellent opportunities for UK business across a range of sectors including education, healthcare, training, culture and financial and professional services.

The Qatar/UK Year of Culture 2013 is strengthening the bond between our countries. We are keen to build on a series of cultural, educational and sporting activities planned for this year in Qatar and the UK, to further develop mutual understanding.

This publication, produced with UKTI support sets out why more UK companies should take a closer look at doing business in Qatar.  The British Embassy is committed to deepen and broaden our relationship with Qatar. There are great opportunities here and the Embassy's UKTI team and I look forward to working with British business in order to strengthen further the bilateral trade and investment relationship.
